About the Journal

An-Nisa’ Journal of Gender Studies is a reputable international peer-reviewed journal that publishes original research articles and scholarly reviews in the field of gender studies. The journal focuses on critical and interdisciplinary analyses of gender, women, and power relations across social, cultural, legal, educational, religious, and media contexts, with particular attention to Muslim societies and the Global South. It promotes progressive and inclusive approaches to gender studies through critical interpretations of religious texts and Islamic law, as well as empirical analyses of gender dynamics in education, public policy, socio-religious institutions, media, digital culture, and contemporary public spaces. An-Nisa' Journal of Gender Studies invites submissions from researchers, scientists, and academics in the ASEAN region and around the world on topics including:

  •  Gender, Islam, and Socio-Legal Transformation
    Gender interpretations in the Qur’an and Hadith; Islamic feminism and critical hermeneutics; gender justice in Islamic family law (marriage, divorce, taklik talak, and the right of reconciliation); state–religion relations in gender-responsive regulation; and women’s leadership and authority within Islamic traditions and institutions.
  • Gender, Education, and Knowledge Production
    Gender perspectives in Islamic education and pesantren curricula; women’s leadership in educational institutions; gender mainstreaming in education policy; santri literacy, critical pedagogy, and epistemic transformation in knowledge production.
  • Gender, Media, Culture, and Digital Representation
    Gender bias and stereotypes in textbooks and educational media; representation and objectification of women in popular culture; digital communities and cultures, fandom and cosplay, digital identities, as well as negotiation, resistance, and gender activism in media spaces.
  • Gender-Based Violence, Justice, and Social Policy
    Domestic violence and crimes against women; structural, cultural, and institutional factors of gender-based violence; legal and public policy responses; community-based responses; and case studies from Asia, Africa, and other Global South regions.
  • Gender, Society, Sustainability, and Peace
    Women’s empowerment and social transformation; gender and conflict resolution; peacebuilding processes; the role of civil society and faith-based organizations; ecofeminism, environmental ethics, and gender-just ecological sustainability.
